Dear Students and Educators,
On Thursday, September 6, ORV Alguita will head out to sea for an overnight "shake down" cruise. This will be an opportunity for us to run a systems test and train the new crew before the upcoming extended voyage. This will also be an opportunity for us to meet the new crew and an opportunity for you to interview them! Post your questions to the comments section under this message or have your teacher send them in an email!

Questions:
Have any of the crew sailed aboard Alguita before?
Where are the crew from?
Thanks.
Have any of the crew sailed aboard Alguita before?
Three of the crew have sailed aboard ORV Alguita before; the captain, lead researcher and ship's doctor. The captain has logged over 75,000 miles of research voyages aboard!
Where are the crew from?
Long Beach, CA
Los Angeles, CA
Miami, FL
St. Augustine, FL
Atlanta, GA
I will have to ask the lead researcher Dr. Lorena Rios.
Here is the address of the "Meet the Crew" page on the "Ship to Shore" website. I will be filling in information for the rest of the crew as I get it!

Hi, Holly,
My blog log in wasn't letting letting me on this morning. I want to let you know questions my students have.
-Exactly where will the ship be? I'm wondering if you'll post longitude and latitude so we can follow on a map.
-What instruments will be used? What data collected?
-What are the questions you want to answer?
Thanks,and have a great trip!

Questions to the crew: How long have you done research and boating combined? What's your favorite meal at sea? What is your least favorite meal? What do you do if you get seasick? What is the coolest thing you've seen at sea? What is the most unbelievable sight you have encountered?
Thanks for taking the time to answer our questions.

Do you carry any sort of telescopes on board or other sky watching equipment?
We have a pair of Fujinon image stabilizing binoculars from Japan that can resolve the moons of Jupiter on board, and we have a sextant that can determine the height of celestial objects above the horizon for navigation.
Captain Moore
Is your sextant of the antique variety or is this a modern sextant? This would really be an interesting story for my students to follow, the Time Line of the Sextant! Was its use part of your training or something you investigated yourself?
